CHAPTER FOUR
“Hello, Akito?”
<<Ooi…Taipi. What’s up, bro? How are you doing?>>
“Great…I’m good, Akito. How about you?”
<<Well, I am just like how I am. We’re busy practicing for the basketball game this coming weekend. Oh, Junta’s here too. Wanna talk to him?>>
“No, it’s ok. You guys are still competing that basketball game? What, you wanna win this for three years in a row?”
<<Ok…first of all, we never won and you know that. Not after you left us. Secondly, stop underestimating us like that, Taipi. You demotivated us…especially our manager, Bunichi. Mean~~~~>>
“Ok..ok…I’m just kidding. Forgive me. I have a good feeling that you guys will make it this year, believe me. Has Bunichi improving his jumping skills?”
<<Talking about that boy….he is improving but not on the court. You know what? He’s being noisier every year. Last year, me and Junta were thinking of sacking him out of the court.>>
“Hahaha….You better do. He might be the reason you guys loose….”
<<You really are mean, bro. Say, Taipi. You sound…..happy….and cheerful. Anything you wanna tell me? I’m sure you are not gonna pay some bills just to listen to me complaining about Bunichi or the game…>>
“Well, you do can read my mind. Emmm… you remember that Hiro boy I told you before?”
<<The boy you fell in love with? What’s with him? Don’t tell me you’re thinking of proposing him…>>
“Oi! Stop having this ‘Taipi is interested with boys now’ thinking in your mind, will you? And if I do, I would have chosen you as my partner than any other person…..”
<<EEWWW~~~~~stop scaring me, Taipi. So, what’s up with this boy?>>
“I…I told him everything. I mean, EVERYTHING. About my past, about her, her death.”
<<And….?>>
“And… I think you’re right, Akito. I should stop blaming myself. I shouldn’t live with this regretful for the rest of my life. I should move on. Maybe Mitsu too didn’t want me to be like this because of her death. She must be upset with me now.”
<<You damn know I’m always right. So, what are you going to do now? I mean, about the boy.>>
“Nothing. We’ll be friends like now. Though, I do treat him as my brother sometimes. Thanks to him that I can get my feet on the ground back.”
<<You were torturing yourself too much this three years, Taipi. You should just get over it. I’m glad to know this.>>
------------------------------------------------------------------
“Fuji-senpai, the study week is approaching in few days. Do you plan to go home during that week?” Kitayama looked at the other who was busy reading some printed A4 papers before arranging it according to the page numbers, in his room. They were working on the last assignment given before the final exam started in two weeks’ time.
“I wanted to but staying here will make me more focus and concentrate on my study. There are too many bad influences at my house. What about you, Hiro?” Fujigaya placed all the papers in a file before putting it on the table, to be submitted tomorrow.
“I have to go back or my mother will declare the World War 3 with me. It’s been months since I met her. Would you like to come along?” Kitayama was quite certain that this wasn’t a good idea and the other might not accept it but it was part of his plan.
“Eyh? You mean, to your house? Where is it?” Fujigaya had never asked and knew anything about Kitayama’s house but he assumed that the boy was from somewhere afar since that boy never went back home.
“My hometown is only 2 hours’ drive from here. It’s not that far. Come on, meet my mother. Then stay for a few days. We can do revision together.” Surely, that was not his main intention of inviting the other.
“Well….I’ll think about it. It may be a good idea to meet your mother. I’m curious to know the person who gave birth to this brat.” Fujigaya punched the other on his right shoulder playfully before stood up and laughing at the other’s cry of pain.
“I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun there, senpai. You’ll be surprised to see my house and my room.” Kitayama smiled to the other. ‘I’ll make sure you’ll be shocked that day.’
“Is that so? What kind of surprise should I expect? That you have a big room? With lots of huge teddy bears? That will not be a surprise for me, Hiro.” Fujigaya handed over a cup of plain drinking water to other.
“A surprise is a surprise. Just wait until that day.” Kitayama grinned before pouring some water into his mouth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
“NOOOO!!!!!!”
“Hiro?” It was 3.30 in the morning that Fujigaya suddenly heard that loud scream coming from Kitayama’s room, making him to take a look at the younger boy.
“Hiro, are you alright?” Fujigaya stepped closer to the other’s bed and shook the tiny shoulder gently.
“Un…senpai? What are you doing here?” Kitayama half opened his eyes and rubbed them with his index finger. His cheeks were full of sweats, so did his pillow and his back.
“I heard you screamed just now so I thought something happened. You had a nightmare?” Fujigaya carried a small bottle of drinking water and passed it to the other.
“Did I? Sorry, senpai. It was just …. a bad dream.” Kitayama couldn’t remember clearly what he dreamt of, that made him screaming like a maniac.
“Come on. Get up and wash your face. Then go back to sleep.”
“Senpai….don’t you wanna know what I dreamt of?” The only thing Kitayama remembered about his dream was Fujigaya involved.
“All the food in this world had gone missing?” Fujigaya threw a small laugh after seeing the other looking clueless.
“Actually, I can’t remember what it was but I saw you.” He did remember seeing Fujigaya’s face was pale and terrified of someone, who resembled him but he didn’t know who was that boy and what he was about to do to the other. And he didn’t have the idea why he screamed.
“Never mind. It’s just a dream. Maybe you are thinking too much. Now, go back to sleep. Oh, by the way, I don’t think I can accompany you to your house. I still have lots of things to do. You know, this is my final semester so I have to do some clearance things. I’m sorry, boy.” He lied. He just didn’t want to go the other’s house. He didn’t ready yet. Not after he saw what he shouldn’t see in Kitayama’s room.
“Is that so? Not even a day? That’s sad. But I guess it can’t be helped, right? Maybe I can pay you a visit when I have the time, can I?” He definitely will as he still had an unfinished business with the older boy and it had to be settled before Fujigaya graduated.
“Of course you can. Just come anytime you want.” Fujigaya made a move to his room. He couldn’t stand to be in that room any longer. The photos he saw had piling up his confusion about Kitayama. He just needed to clarify more but he wasn’t sure how and when. Knowing that, he could have guessed why the other had nightmares. It was not the first time he heard it. Fujigaya had being disturbed by the other’s screaming in the middle of his sleep many times before. He just didn’t care about it. It was only today that he felt the need to waking up the boy. And he regretted his deed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
It had been a week since the study time started. It had been a week since Fujigaya left alone in the room. Kitayama kept pursuing him to follow him to his house, until the last minute before the other left the campus. Fujigaya only sent him to the bus station and waved him goodbye. He could see Kitayama was upset with him but he just couldn’t go with the other. The photos that he saw were still haunting his mind until now. What should he do? Call Kitayama and ask about it? Call Akito and tell what he saw to the other?
“Arrrghhhhh~~~~~” Fujigaya pulled his hair back and messed it before he heard his phone rang. The name ‘Hiro’ appeared as the caller ID.
‘What does this guy want?’ Fujigaya slide the green button on the screen to the right side and put the phone on the right side of his face.
“Hiro, what’s up, boy?” He suddenly missed the boy’s cheerful voice but…
<<Senpai, I’m here, in our campus. Would you mind to meet me on the roof top of our faculty building?>>
“What are you doing there? Are you alright, Hiro?” Fujigaya sensed something was not right with the other. He sounded so monotonous and emotionless. ‘What happened to this boy?’
<<Just….come here.>> The other hung up his phone. Fujigaya quickly grabbed his cap and his jacket before running out of his room and the hostel. Their faculty building was just few metres away so he managed to arrive there in few minutes. As soon as he reached the top, he saw the small boy standing on the edge of the roof top, facing the sky.
“Hiro.” The other turned himself facing Fujigaya. He looked different. He wasn’t the same Hiro who was cheerful and always smiling. This Hiro looked so disconsolate and his hair was messy. There was full of rage in his eyes, which Fujigaya never saw before.
“Hiro? What’s wrong? What happened to you?” Fujigaya took few steps closer to the other but Kitayama stepped backwards as he saw Fujigaya was approaching him. He was just a few centimeters away from the edge of the building.
“Fujigaya, I don’t think you should ask that question. You saw those photos, right?” Kitayama stopped moving when he saw the other was doing the same too.
“What photos?”
“STOP PLAYING DUMB, FUJIGAYA!!! I know you saw them. That’s why you didn’t want to come with me.” Kitayama’s voice became husky when he shouted to the other. His face was reddened, showing his anger towards the other.
“Ok… true. I saw those photos. But that’s not the reason why I declined your invitation. And you don’t have to be this upset.” Fujigaya tried to grab the other slowly but Kitayama created more gaps between them by stepping further backwards.
“Good…. So I guess I don’t have to pretend anymore.” Kitayama laughed like a devil that Fujigaya had never heard before.
“What’s wrong, Hiro? Did I do something wrong?” Fujigaya was confused and completely had no idea what was going on.
“I’m glad you ask that, Fujigaya. You wanna know about those photos, right?” Kitayama took out a piece of 3R – sized photo from his right pocket and showed it to the taller boy. “And I bet about this too, right?”
“What….How you get this?” It was a different photo from what he saw in Kitayama’s room but this was more unexpected. It was a photo of him and Mitsu. He remembered it was taken when they visited the amusement park on their first date.
“Wait, I … have another one.” Kitayama took out another photo. This time it was a photo of himself and Mitsu posing in front of a house. Kitayama quickly put it back into his pocket when Fujigaya was about to grab it from his hand.
“What’s all this? I don’t understand.” Fujigaya shook his head several times while looking at the other with a confused look.
“Too many questions, mister. Now let me tell you something.” Kitayama moved a bit far away from the edge, heading to the center of the roof top before sitting on the floor.
“Hanazawa Mitsuki, born on 17th September. She should be 21 years old now if she’s still alive. She lived with his father after her parents divorced when she was 8. Died three years ago after her beloved boyfriend left her. Before that, she was a permanent resident of a hospital for 3 months, suffering from a lung cancer, which I bet her boyfriend never knew that. A cheerful, joyful girl. She was an athlete, representing her school three years in a row during her primary school time but she was warned by the doctor not to be so athletic after she was attacked by the cancer. Secretly, she entered a basketball club when she was 16 though she never knew how to throw a ball. Met a bad temper, inconsiderate and cold-blooded boy but she managed to ‘melt’ him down somehow. That boy claimed he loved her very much but left her by only one text message. Do you know who that boy is, Fujigaya?” Kitayama laughed (or might be cried at the same time) when he saw the other’s face. Fujigaya was totally shocked.
“What…. How do you know about her? Who are you?” There was no way Kitayama knew that much about his girl. He didn’t tell him her birthday, her full name. But he too didn’t know Mitsu was hospitalized after he left the town.
“Me? Kitayama Hiromitsu, born on 17th September, 21 years old. Now, I live with my mother after she divorced with my father when I was 8. I have,.. ops! USED to have a sister who was born 17 minutes after me named Mitsuki, who died three years ago after being left by her boyfriend named Fujigaya Taisuke.” Kitayama drew out his and Mitsu’s ID cards to prove his words to the other.
“Wait a minute!! It can’t be….Mitsu never told me about….”
“About me? About having a twin brother? Of course she wouldn’t. We promised not to say anything about each other to anyone.”
“Why? And this cancer, how come I never know about this?” Fujigaya clearly remembered that Mitsu had never told him about her sickness. And he never saw the other feeling sick or taking any pills.
“It was complicated. Let’s just say, it’s our ‘life insurance’. We just didn’t want to expose ourselves. Mitsuki suffered the cancer since she was 10. It was bad. But after she met you, she seemed to be better. No frequent attack like before. I did believe that happiness could kill the disease. But, you…. You took that from her!” Kitayama stood up and grabbed Fujigaya’s jacket’s collar, pushing him towards the bar at the edge of the building.
“Hiro….what do you want from me? Let go of me!” Fujigaya struggled to take off the other’s grasp but Kitayama was too strong. He held on the bar, preventing from getting fall. He sure the other was attempting to throw him down.
“You know what? You are dumb and naïve. Didn’t you ever think why I brought you to places that you and Mitsu like to go? Eating food that Mitsu loved? Asking you to call me that name?” Kitayama tightened his grip and slammed Fujigaya towards the bar. Fujigaya felt a severe pain when his back hitting the bar.
“Hiro…you don’t wanna do this. How do you find me?” Fujigaya tried to escape from the other’s grip by pushing the other hard. Kitayama fall on his butt and he sat there, laughing so hard.
“It was so easy to recognize you, Fujigaya. I never saw you but I knew it was you the moment I see you in the lecture hall. How did I find you? Well, let’s just say it was a help from God.”
------------------------------------------------------------------
<<Hello, Mikkun?>>
“Oi…Micchan. What’s up, sis?”
<<How do you do, Mikkun? Is mom fine?>>
“We both are good. How about you? Did you manage to make some new friends from your new school?”
<<Well, few classmates, yes…..>>
“Tell me about it.”
<<Mikkun, I joined this club. A basketball club.>>
“What? Why? I never know you’re interested in any sports involving balls before.”
<<Not really but….>>
“It’s not the club that attracts you, right?”
<<You can say that. Two days back, I came back a bit late after finishing my class work. And I passed by the court. There was this boy practicing alone. It was already 6 in the evening. I decided to take a look. This boy, he was so….stunning, running forth and back with the ball in his hand. When he bounced the ball and jumped, it was the loveliest thing I’ve ever seen.>>
“And it happened that boy is the president of the club, right?”
<<Yeah… I registered into the club yesterday and he was there. But he was scary.>>
“Are you sure about this, Micchan? You know you are not allowed to do any physical activities anymore.”
<<I know but I just can’t help it. I want to be like him. I want to be as good as him.>>
“Well, it’s your choice, Micchan. Just don’t go over the limit. I don’t want to see you in the hospital again.”
<<I won’t.>>
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
<<Mikkun?>>
“What’s up, sis?”
<<Mikkun…he …. he proposed me.>>
“He did?”
<<Yup…he did it yesterday. I don’t know what to say….I’m speechless. So, I just ran away.>>
“You what? Come on….he’s a good guy, right? Why won’t you accept him?”
<<I didn’t reject him but I didn’t say yes too. I just….didn’t know what to do.>>
“How about meet him tomorrow and tell you real feelings to him? Say, Micchan. How’s this lucky boy look like? Is he taller than me?”
----------------------------------------------------------------
“He’s about 175 cm tall with a beautiful tan skin. His hair is long and wavy at the back. Half of his face is covered with his long bangs that he would tie it up when he was acting in the court. His eyes are dark and sharp. His nose is small but not really pointed. He has a dark plum coloured pair of lips. His voice is really soothing and deep. He has this dark aura around him but when he smiles, he’s shining like a sun.” Kitayama tried to memorize how Mitsu described Fujigaya the day she called him about the proposal.
“She described me very well. But how do you know I’m here?” Fujigaya maintained his position, in case if the other would attack him back.
“She called me the day you sent that message. She didn’t cry, but she didn’t laugh either. She sounded empty. I took the initiatives to find where you go. Lucky me that I met a friend of yours, who told me which university you were entering. And fortunately, I passed the exam to enter the same university. So, here I am.” Kitayama did go ups and downs finding information about Fujigaya. He did try his best to pass the exam, just to ensure he would meet Fujigaya in the campus. He was very lucky when the administrator who was in charge of the hostel was his friend’s mother. That was how he managed to be in the same room with the other.
“I’m … I’m sorry, Hiro. I didn’t know it affected her so bad. After all, it was my fault right?” Fujigaya sat on the floor while leaning against the bars. He took off his cap and grabbed his hair, regretting of what happened. If only he knew this would happen, he would properly meet Mitsu and explained everything. If only he knew she was sick, he would definitely find the time to be with her.
“It IS your fault. You took her life, you gave her hopes, happiness but you stole them from her, brutally. She was so damn happy for the six months you were with her. I never saw she was that bright before. She loved you so much, Fujigaya. Why did you do that to her? Why did you take her away from me? She was the only person that I love most. More than my own self.” Kitayama’s eyes were full of crystal waters, waiting to drop down the cheeks. His voice was vaguely heard.
“I loved her too, more than you know. My life was a misery these three years, not knowing what exactly happened to her. Please, Hiro. What can I do to make thing right?” Fujigaya slowly moved closer to the boy who sat on the floor with his face looking at the ground.
“There’s nothing you can do. You can’t bring her back. Neither does me.” Fujigaya could see the water starting to flow down the other’s cheeks, hitting the floor. He slowly grabbed the other’s shoulder before the other quickly grabbed his arm and punched his face very hard. Fujigaya who was shocked with the sudden action, backed up while touching the spot where he got punched.
“I so damn wanted to do that since the first time we met. I wanted to shout at you how mean you are. I wanted to beat you so bad till you can’t move anymore!” Kitayama clenched his fist so hard that he could feel his blood stop flowing in his veins.
“Then, DO IT! Just do it, you fool!!!” Fujigaya pulled the other’s fist and punched himself several times.
“Just do it, Hiro. I know I deserve this. Please…. If this can lessen our burden and our sadness, just do it. Do whatever you want.” Kitayama pulled back his hand from the other’s and moved back.
“No… It’s no use anymore. This will change nothing, Fujigaya. At least, I succeed to bring back your guilty feeling, just like I wanted to. I managed to make you in grief again. But, there’s only one thing you can do.” Kitayama grasped the tanned boy by his shoulders very hard. “Forget her. Forget me. Move on. Get out of our life, forever. Make sure I’ll never see you again.” Slowly, he made a move leaving the place, leaving the boy who he hated so much. His plan was to pushed him from the roof top, or beat him to death, or just stabbed him with anything, as long as the other would vanish form the world. He just wanted the boy to die. Just like his beloved sister. But God knows why he couldn’t do that.
“I will leave this place. I will get out of here. I’m sorry for what I’ve done, Hiro. But don’t ask me to forgive her…..and you.” Fujigaya knew Kitayama didn’t hear what he said. But he promised himself that he would never show up anywhere near Kitayama again.
