“Good morning, little guy. Feeling good today?” Taisuke looked at the small guy lying on the bed covered with white sheet while putting his backpack on the chair beside the bed.
“Morning, Taisuke. You’re sweating a lot.”
“It’s hot outside. You know, you are lucky being here. With all the cold air and comfort bed and free meals, I’m sure you enjoy your stay here.” Taisuke laughed at his own mumbling, alone.
“It’s boring here. I can’t move at all. My body aches like hell.”
“I wonder how long you have to be here….Ah, by the way, I met Yokoo-san at the convenience store across the street just now. Seems like he’s still mad at me. What should I do?” Taisuke took a seat on the chair before pulling a thick book written ‘Microeconomics’ on the hard cover, out from his backpack. He opened the book and switched on his notebook, which he put on the right lower edge of the bed.
“Yokoo is just too concern about me. He’s not the type who can prolong his anger to others. He’ll be okay within few days.”
“I hope he’ll forgive me. I don’t like getting mad at people neither gets mad by others. You don’t mad at me, right?” Taisuke started to hit some of the keyboard keys with his long slender fingers.
“Why should I? You won’t come to see me if I mad at you.”
“Never mind. As I promised earlier, I’ll be here until the day you wake up.” Being there by the other’s side was his responsibility now, he thought. And he was happy doing that even though he has nothing to do with the guy on the bed.

“You still dare to come here?” Taisuke was awaken by a harsh voice coming out from Yokoo’s mouth.
“Yokoo-kun…I just wanna make sure he’s alright…”
“You damn know he’s not! You are really dared to come here, after what you did to him. Now get out! I don’t think he’ll recover as long as you are here.” Yokoo pulled Taisuke by his arm and threw the other out of the opened door. Taisuke grabbed his backpack before stunned by the door being slammed hard by Yokoo from the other side.
It was the same. It was still the same like days ago. Yokoo will never forgive him. Of course, he won’t. Taisuke had hurt his best friend. Any person would do the same. And any other person would run away if being treated like what Yokoo did to him, but not Taisuke. In fact, he chose not to run away. He wanted to wait until the guy wake up so he can properly seek his apology, or he would never forgive himself.

“Why are you making your life harder, Taipi? I don’t understand.” Kawaii asked his best friend right after he took a seat in front of the other, in the college café. Taisuke didn’t seem feeling well. Kawaii could see that his best friend whom he knew since they were in high school was not in good condition. ‘This guy is really messing his own life now.’ Kawaii talked to himself.
“Ha? I don’t know what are you talking about, Fumito.” He handed over a plate with 2 pieces of tuna sandwiches on top of it, to the brown-dyed hair boy. He bought 3 and eaten a piece, purposely leaving another two for his friend as he knew sandwich was Kawaii’s all-time favourite breakfast meal.
“Oh….you know what I mean, boy. You and that hospitalized guy. You’ve done your part, right? Called the ambulance and made a police report about it? It wasn’t your business anymore, right?” Kawaii sipped the iced chocolate from Taisuke’s glass and bit a mouthful of the sandwich while finishing his sentence. A few small pieces of tuna dropped out of his mouth making the table top a bit messy.
“Can you not talk and eat at the same time? It’s disgusting.” Taisuke cleaned the mess made by Kawaii with a tissue while the other just grinned watching the other’s deed.
“It is my fault. It is always mine. And I really need to wait until he wakes up to properly ask for an apology. Though, I know he will never forgive me. I’m responsible for what had happened to his mother. I don’t know how I can tell him that but I will definitely do it one day.” Taisuke took back his drink before finished the whole glass quickly. He jumped out of his seat as soon as he realized he was late for his class. After putting a few dollars on the table (of course, for Kawaii to pay the bill on his behalf), he rushed towards the second floor of the same building where the lecture hall was located.
‘You are too kind, Taipi. I’m sure you’ll get nothing but pain in return.’ Kawaii had always admire how Taisuke being nice and kind to others but he knew that his good deeds sometimes made him suffer more. Kawaii can never forget how he helped Tamamori to complete his assignment (or more like, he completed Tamamori’s assignment) while the other was busy flirting with Taipi’s girlfriend at the same time. Kawaii hated Tamamori so much till he even planned with Tottsu to beat him but Taisuke just let that slipped through his fingers, without getting mad at both Tamamori and his girlfriend. And this time, it was still Tamamori’s fault that he had to go back and forth to the hospital and sometimes neglecting his study, just to make sure that the guy whom he hit will not blame Tamamori for that.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Knock! Knock!” Taisuke pretending to knock the opened door and slowly entered the room after he was sure that Yokoo was not there. Not that he hated the tall guy but he didn’t want to get into another fight anymore.
“I thought you will never come again after what had happened yesterday.”
“I’m sorry for leaving you without saying anything yesterday. Well, not that I didn’t want to.” Taisuke pulled the chair closer to the bed and threw a happy smile to the small guy on the bed.
“How are you feeling today?”
“Boring. I want to go home. Please take me out from here.”
“Well, I guess I’m asking the wrong question. You know how long have you been here?” Taisuke pulled out the clipboard hanging on the bed and acted like a doctor examining his patient. He was delighted reading what was written on the paper, though he only knew roughly that the guy’s condition was getting better.
“I’ve lost counting the days. Maybe a year?”
“Let’s see…..If my calculation is perfect, I think today is your 85th day….Uwaa~~~ it’s almost three months. Let’s celebrate your 3-month ‘holiday’ anniversary in five days more. I’ll buy a cake. What’s your favourite?” Taisuke starting to type ‘bakery in XXX’ in the Google search box and jot down few choices of cake on his small notebook that he always keeps in his pocket.
“I like cherry cheese cake.”
“Okay…I think I’ve made a choice. I’ll call the bakery asking them to bake one for us.” He took out his blue Toshiba Regza phone and talked with the bakery person for a few seconds.
“Which one do you buy?”
“I’m not gonna tell you what flavor I bought. Just wait and see on that day.” Taisuke lay down on the sofa located beside the window and started to read the same book he brought yesterday. Soon after few pages, he had already closed his eyes and the book dropped on the floor.
“That was fast! I thought I’m the only person who’ll fall asleep the moment I flip open a book.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Taa..da…surprise!” Taisuke entered the room with a red box in his right hand and few packets of junk food in his left hand.
“Isn’t today is a bit early to celebrate my ‘3-month in hospital’ anniversary? You really want to celebrate this day, don’t you?”
“Well, I know this is quite early but I can’t wait. Plus, today is a very special day you know. My mid semester break is starting today too so let me play a bit earlier.” Taisuke opened the box and took out a 6 inches diameter red-white cake before set it on top of the folded box.
“You really bought it, my favourite cheese cake!”
“It’s you we’re celebrating, right? But, I’m sorry I didn’t invite your friends along because….” Taisuke was interrupted by the sound of the door being opened before found out it was Yokoo.
“What’s all this?” With a harsh monotonous voice, Yokoo tried to take the cake before being stopped by Taisuke.
“Please, Yokoo-san. Let me explain.” Taisuke quickly saved the cake from Yokoo’s reach before putting it somewhere far so that the other wouldn’t touch it.
“What’s with this cake? Are you celebrating something? What? The anniversary of this guy being in hospital? IS THAT IT?”
“Yes…but I don’t mean anything bad.”
“Nothing bad? You know what? From the very first day you were here, from the day you made this guy like this, from the first day this guy had to be on this bed, you did nothing but EVIL THINGS! Do you realize that??? And now what, you’re happy seeing this guy not moving?? Do you have any idea how suffer he is now? Do you ever think how his friends feel? Do you ever feel how pain it is watching your best friend lying on the bed and all that you can do is hope? And how on earth, this thing, this celebration thing, can ever cross your mind? You really get on my nerves, young boy!!!” Yokoo tried to punch Taisuke on his face before the tanned boy grip the other’s wrist really hard.
“Listen, Yokoo-san. Please calm yourself down. Let me explain.” Without letting the other’s wrist go, Taisuke continued. This was the only chance he had to make the other clear of his intention.
“I know you are sad about what had happened to your friend. And I know you’re upset with me. And I do know if I ask for your forgiveness, I will never get it. But please, at least let me do something to lessen my guilty. I know this won’t do any help but I want this guy to be happy. Even though he can’t talk to us, I’m sure he can hear us. And for that, I’m sure he’s happy now, knowing that someone is caring for him. And I don’t mean me. It’s you, Yokoo-san. I was thinking to invite you along today but I don’t have your number and I don’t know where to find you.” Taisuke let go of Yokoo’s hand to take the clipboard that he always checked everyday and showed it to the angry guy.
“Look at this. I don’t really understand these medical terms but what I know is, he’s getting better day by day. Even the doctor had told me that his recovery is quite fast. And you know why? Because somebody is here, to talk to him, to make him react, to prevent his brain from stop functioning. He’s reacting towards our talk, our actions. Maybe you don’t realize this because you can’t be here all the time.” Taisuke carefully took a glance at Yokoo’s face while the other was taking few steps towards the sofa. His face was no longer in anger. Instead, Taisuke could see Yokoo’s eyes were teary. Taisuke sure the other was keeping his sadness inside all this while.
“Yokoo-san, I’m here not only because I felt guilty. I’m here because I think he needs someone to be with him. And I know you can’t do that even though I’m sure you really wanna do this, right? That’s why you’re mad at me. But I do understand.” Taisuke continued to explain as he was pretty sure the other was not going to attack him anymore. Slowly, Yokoo sat down on the white sofa and cupped his face with his skinny hands.
“I…I don’t know what to do. I’m helpless….My best friend is lying on the bed and I can’t do anything for him.” Tears were starting to flow down the dark hair guy’s cheeks and his voice was a bit stuttered. He pitied his friend so much but yet, he couldn’t do anything. He had work to be concentrated at.
“That’s why I’m here. I don’t mean to replace your place but this is the least that I can do for this guy. You shouldn’t blame yourself. You did many things for him. You were still come visit him even for a short time. And I do believe this guy appreciate that more than anything.” Taisuke set a seat beside the other and carefully patted Yokoo’s shoulder.
“Taisuke’s right, Wataru. I never blame you for not being here. I understand your work very much.”
“But I still will never forgive you for this, boy.” Even though he had calm a bit, he could never accept what Taisuke had done to his friend easily. Deep inside his heart, other than feeling angst, he was just envy for the other to be able to be beside his friend. Shouldn’t he feel grateful instead?
“I’m ok with that, Yokoo-san. I don’t expect you will forgive me easily. Nevertheless, I will try my best to lessen this guy’s pain though I don’t know how.” The only thing Taisuke was hoping now is that, he would get Yokoo’s permission to stay there.
“Now, can we not fighting for the sake of this guy here? I think he’s been waiting to taste the cake.” Taisuke put the cake back on the table where he set it earlier and poured the orange juice into two glasses before handing one to Yokoo.
“I’m glad you both are in good terms now. I’m afraid I’ll lose one of you.”
“But….still….”
“Yes… yes….Yokoo-san. I will. I will make sure this guy know each and every details of the incident. You have my word.” Taisuke nodded his head few times while forming a smile with his dark plum lips. Yet, he was still not sure from where will he get the courage to do so.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Good morning……” With a very joyful voice, Taisuke took off the black cap covering his head before combing his hair with his fingers.
“You’re early today. And look….cheerful.”
“Hmm….I’m on my way to the library and decided to drop by to see you. I don’t know why but I have a feeling that something good is going to happen today.” Taisuke pulled the curtains to both sides to allow the fresh air entering the room.
“I hope you’re right. And I hope that good thing is about me.”
“Maybe…..well, maybe….you gonna open your eyes today? It’s been ages, you know. And if that doesn’t happen until I graduate, how can I come here anymore?” Taisuke couldn’t stop praying for the other to recover soon and wake up so that he could really talk to him.
“Do you really like to see my friend lying there forever?” Dissatisfied with what he had just heard, Yokoo stepped in the room without any greetings to Taisuke, who was shocked with the other’s presence.
“Yokoo-san…I didn’t expect you’ll come…at least not this early in the morning.” Taisuke bowed his head a bit to the thin guy in a casual wear, an orange long sleeve shirt and a pair of black jeans. He looked good in that.
“It’s Saturday and I’m totally free today so I thought it’s a good day to pay him a visit. I never knew you are really grateful with his condition now.”
“I don’t mean that. It’s a joke, of course. Why can’t you think at least a bit positive about me?” Taisuke sat on the chair beside the bed and looked at the empty floor under him.
“Because you still don’t deserve that. Not until my friend decide on that, which I don’t think he will see your kindness too.” Yokoo stepped closer to the small guy on the bed before he started to notice something.
“Please guys. Stop fighting about me. Both of you mean a lot to me. Both of you are the strength for me to keep on living.”
“Wait…Taisuke. Look at this.” Taisuke who was already standing by the window, turned his head towards the voice.
“This….must be kidding….” Taisuke was surprised to see the guy on the bed moved his fingers slowly.
“Taisuke…” The first name came out from him right after he managed to open his small eyes.
