“Yo, Hiro!” Taisuke waved his right hand several times to a small boy who was already pulling a very long face while sitting on the floor.
“You are…….7 minutes late!”Hiromitsu looked at his watch, counting down how much time he had waited for Taisuke, as always.
“Sorry, sorry. Fumito tricked me to buy him lunch just now and didn’t want to let me go.” Taisuke briefly explained while putting his two palms closing together, apologizing.
“Don’t you know how to be on time? You were the one who set it, you know!” Hiromitsu already had few books lying on the floor while gripping a red mechanical pencil in his right hand. He used that pencil for almost 4 years now, after received it from Taisuke on his 14th birthday.
“Yes…yes….forgive me. My bad. Thousand apologies, Boss.” Taisuke saluted Hiromitsu with his left hand cheekily before starting to pack out few books from his black-coloured backpack.
“Cut it off. I will definitely be your boss someday so that I can fire you on your very first day working because of coming late.” Hiromitsu smiled as he said that. Of course, there’s no way he would do that to a friend who had been with him for more than 10 years since he first moved into the resident.
“You wouldn’t dare…..” Taisuke clicked his tongue while winked his left eye.
“Now, which one will we work at today?” Taisuke flipped through some of the thick books just to find out that he actually couldn’t remember where they stopped at yesterday.
“Taisuke…you really are a ‘Dory’. We did the ’50 horrible Mathematics questions’ that our kind teacher, Sir Matsuzaki threw at us yesterday.” Hiromitsu couldn’t help but shook his head of his friend’s forgetful problem.
“That’s because you’re a tiny little lost Nemo, you brat.” He stood up quickly before Hiromitsu had the chance to throw his pencil case right to other’s back.
Taisuke burst into a big laugh when he handed over the small red plastic container to the other.
“Say, Hiro…”
“Hm?”
“Do you really think we can go to the same university together? And take the same course?” Taisuke had always hoped that he can be with Hiromitsu through his university life. He was not good in making new friends. It was Hiromitsu who started their friendship when they were still in the preliminary school.
“Why are you asking this now? You were the one who encouraged me a lot to do my best in study during our middle school time. I wouldn’t aim for furthering my study if you didn’t force me to.” Hiromitsu put his pencil down and looked straight at his friend’s face, wondering why must that question had to come out from the tanned boy’s mouth.
“It’s just….well, look at my result now. I almost failed all. And the homework we did last night, I only managed to solve like…1 question? And you did the rest. I don’t think I can make it.”
“What are you talking about? I’ll make sure you will make it, bro. You think I’m gonna left you behind? Come on, Taisuke. We only have a few months before the exam. And you are not allowed to give up right now.”
“I don’t know….,” he paused his words before took a seat right in front of his small friend.
“Hiro, let’s make a promise.” Taisuke moved closer to the small boy sitting in front of him.
“What promise?”
“That we will definitely go the university together, be there for each other, for better or worse. Got it?” Taisuke raised up his little finger before Hiromitsu hooked it with his.
“Got it! Now let’s get busy.” Hiromitsu could clearly see Taisuke was smiling happily while writing down some formulas on his exercise book.

“Mitsu.” A soft pat was felt on his shoulder, enough to make him coming back to the present time.
“Hm? Ah, sorry. Yes, I do agree with the idea. Except that, how do we transfer all these data from all the tests we did and make one solid graph out of these?” Hiromitsu scratched his head at the back before trying to type some numbers in his notebook.
“Are you okay? You seem…..diverted these few days.” Totsuka knew something is bugging the other’s mind. Totsuka is one of their team members for their final year project, alongside another 5 boys, including Taisuke.
“Eh? No, I’m totally ok. I guess I had less sleep for the sake of completing this paper.” Hiromitsu continued clicking the left button of the red mouse few times before smiled a bit, forcibly.
“Look. I think this should be the correct graph.” He turned his notebook monitor facing the rest to show his final draft work.
“But isn’t the line progression is a bit weird? How come the power decreased when we lengthen the time of the fuel injection?” Yokoo seems a bit confused while staring at monitor.
“Of course it will. There many other parameters that contributes to the power output. You should learn the formulas, Watta.” Totsuka handed over an opened book to Wataru to show the said formulas.
“Like Tottsu said. I’ve already inserted the formulas and make the output being calculated automatically before converted them into graph forms.” Hiromitsu switched the screen to an Excel file where he inserted all the data and the formulas.
“Aaa~~~now I understand.” Yokoo nodded his head few times as a sign of he could understand it.
“By the way, Hiro. Where’s Taipi? Did he inform you of his absence for this session?” Junta flipped open his mobile phone to check any text from the other member, Taisuke.
“Err…I don’t think he won’t come. Maybe a bit late. He had tutorial session last night, right?” Hiromitsu can’t remember if he received any calls or texts from Taisuke this morning before he headed to the lab.
Not later than that, they saw a slim tall boy running toward the lab’s door, with a plain blue t-shirt and a pair of dark blue jeans. A black cap with the number ‘11’ embroidered on top of it covered his dark brown hair.
“Sorry guys…..I overslept yesterday and someone purposely forgot to wake me up.” Taisuke put down his backpack on an empty chair beside Hiromitsu as he caught his breath after running down the stairs. He smacked Akito’s shoulder and laughed at Akito’s small shout of hurt.
“You are really late. We almost finish our discussion here. Did you sleep late last night?” Hiromitsu can’t cooperate with this late-coming attitude, even if it’s Taisuke.
“I couldn’t sleep I guess. Don’t get mad, Hiro. I’m only a little late of…..err….2 hours? Ops!” Taisuke covered his mouth with his left palm after found out that it’s already 10 o clock while they supposed to meet at 8.
“Why can’t you be a bit serious about this project, Taisuke! I mean, seriously, this is not the first time you showed up late. And I don’t think it’s the last either.” Hiromitsu started to feel annoy with Taisuke’s attitude of taking things for granted.
“It’s not on purpose you know. Come on, Hiro. Why are raising your voice on me? I’ve already apologize right?” Taisuke still keep his voice low while the other four kept their mouth shut just to avoid things get worse. They know they can never make one of them to back off.
“Because you’re taking this whole important thing easily. This is our chance to get better grades for this semester. And you act like this? I just can’t believe it.” Hiromitsu started to pack his things into his backpack before roughly hung it on his right shoulder.
“Sorry guys. I have to make a move. We’ll continue tonight. I’ll try to finalize our graphs and findings before our meeting. And you, bro. Please be on time tonight or I swear I’ll kick you out of this project so that you have to spend another lovely year here.” Hiromitsu sounds so serious that the other boys just nodding their heads except for Taisuke who saluted his best friend with a cheeky smile on his face.
“Yes, Boss.”

“He’s late….again.” Hiromitsu looked at his watch just to realize that it was already 30 minutes past from their exact meeting time.
“He’s not in his room either, since evening.” Akito put down the files and started to turn his laptop on.
“What’s wrong with this guy?” Tottsu was doing the same thing with Akito because Hiromitsu texted them earlier to bring along their notebooks so they could quickly finish up the report.
“Maybe we need to reconsider his involvement, after all.” Junta plugged in his hard drive into Hiromitsu’s notebook to copy the files of their test results since he was in charge of preparing the analysis and findings.
“I do agree, Jun. Besides, he did nothing, right?” Yokoo was questioning Taisuke’s task where he was supposed to find a company that could provide them with raw or disposed parts.
“But there are times he went out of college in the morning and came back very late at night. I thought he was wandering around to complete that task.” Akito did see his roommate woke up early and went out but he never asked.
“Ha? He never told me about this.” Hiromitsu couldn’t stand his temper and suddenly dialled Taisuke’s number, just to hear the busy tone.
“Mitsu, why don’t we concentrate on this first and we settle Taisuke’s problem later? Prof Joshima wants to see the draft tomorrow. We should at least have something on the papers.” Junta knew well that Hiromitsu was more worry about Taisuke than angry at him, but things had to move on.
“Agree.” The rest continued their typing and clicking job before they realized it was already past midnight. The four boys waved each other goodbye before Hiromitsu approached Akito.
“Can I go to your room? I think I need to talk to Taisuke.”
“Sure. Let’s go but I can’t promise that he’ll come back tonight.” Akito headed Hiromitsu to his room, which wass located in Block H, just a few metres from Hiromitsu’s room in Block F.
“It’s ok. I’ll wait in his room until he comes back.”

The sound of the door knob being turned woke Hiromitsu up, after falling asleep on Taisuke’s bed which covered with a light grey and white stripe bed sheet.
“Uwa! You surprised me, Hiro. I thought I saw a ghost’s kid.” Taisuke covered his mouth of laughter.
“This is not a good time to joke, you brat. Where have you been? Didn’t you remember that we have a meeting tonight?” Hiromitsu controlled his voice to avoid disturbance to the other boys in the room, though they were all separated in a large cubicle.
“AAHH! That’s it. I thought I forgot something. Sorry…..Hiro. I’m truly sorry.” Taisuke changed into his bed wear before took a sit beside Hiromitsu and bowed his head few times.
“Come on, Taisuke. You think I really gonna believe that? Just where did you go until this late at night?”
“Out. Doing something. Ah, Hiro. I just….” Taisuke’s smiling face turned puzzled when Hiromitsu suddenly stood up and faced him, angrily.
“What is that ‘something’, that is more important than our final project, you bastard? Don’t you ever know the word ‘responsible’ and ‘commitment’ in your whole life? You know how tough for us to get things done? And what you can say is, ‘sorry, I forgot’. And threw me your silly stupid smiling face! Grow up, Taisuke! This is about our future!” Hiromitsu didn’t even bother to keep his voice low as he just couldn’t let Taisuke off just like that. He had been patient enough for weeks and that did not gonna last any longer.
“Hiro. Listen to me first.” Taisuke grabbed Hiromitsu’s wrist and tried to pull him to sit down but Hiromitsu snatched his own hand from Taisuke’s.
“YOU LISTEN TO ME! What the hell is wrong with you now? You’re not the person I knew. You never handed off your job. You never forgot important meetings or discussions we set. You never took things easily. You never…..did anything without telling me….. And now, I don’t know where you are, what you do, whom you with. You don’t even bother dropping by at my room for weeks now. Do you still remember our promise that we made on the roof top? I never think you do now.” Hiromitsu took a sit on Taisuke’s study chair and cupped his face which had turned red of anger.
“Of course, I do. How can I forget the promise that I made? It’s just that….”
“You are sick of me, right? Because I’m too dependent and keep bugging you with my life?”
“It’s not that, Hiro. I….I’m worry about you.” Taisuke placed his hand on the other’s small shoulder.
“Worry about me? Why?” Hiromitsu couldn’t see how this problem was related to him.
“Ever since we entered this university, you barely made friends with others. You’ve been with me all the time. I knew you were worried about me because I couldn’t easily make friends but you don’t have to. And you couldn’t do things you like to do, just to make sure that I didn’t being left alone. It’s just….unfair. It’s not fair to you. And why I did this is because I want you to enjoy your student life, at least in our final year here. And I’m glad to see you went to lunch with Watta, or Tottsu. And I’m relieved to see some of the juniors even let you join them when they played soccer. I know you enjoyed that.” Taisuke felt Hiromitsu really need to know the reason behind his ignorance.
“All these wrongdoings are for my sake? How do you expect me to believe this?” Hiromitsu couldn’t simply believe in what Taisuke said.
“Because I told him.” Akito stepped in Taisuke’s cubicle when he heard all the fuss made by the two best friends.
“Ha?”
“Mitsu, do you remember you told me once about how you and Taisuke get along? And how you worry about him not making any friends here? Personally, I think Taisuke needs to know your worries. And I think both of you should look at this matter seriously. I mean, you are worrying about each other but why never tell? And then, without realizing, you are being apart though you never want to. Now, do you both know what to do?” Akito smiled at both faces and patted both shoulders. He stepped out and got back to sleep, hoping to continue his dream of driving the Formula 1 machine, alongside with Schumacher.
“Say, Hiro….. I think Akito is damn right. We’re fighting over things that don’t exist. I’ve neglected you without you knowing the reason. And you mad at me without me knowing why. Aren’t we just stupid?” Taisuke laughed over his own words while Hiromitsu tried to hide his smile.
“Not we. You are. Next time you ignore me I swear I’ll throw you out of the window.”
“Like you can with your ‘Nemo’ hands.” Taisuke started to stand up before Hiromitsu managed to hit him hard on the shoulder with a pillow. With a burst of laughter, Taisuke pushed him aside to make enough space for him to lie down.
“Bro?” Hiromitsu settled down his laugh before turned his head, looking at his best friend’s face.
“Hn?” Taisuke closed his eyes and wrapped his arms behind his head.
“Did you ever forget that promise?” Hiromitsu looked at outside the window to find a beautiful sky was out there.
“No. Did you?” Taisuke still had his eyes closed.
“Of course not. I’m not forgetful like you, ‘Dory’.” Hiromitsu missed to call Taisuke that name.
“Ah!” Taisuke quickly jumped out of his bed before knocked his left knee on the chair.
“Ouch!” He rubbed his knee few times before took out pieces of paper from his bag and handed it over to Hiromitsu.
“Apparently, there’s one company that willing to supply us an engine manufactured in year 2000 and some parts that they want to dispose, for us to use in our project.” Hiromitsu slowly took the papers into his hands and carefully reads it.
“So….this is the ‘something’ that you were working at?”
“Errr….yes.” Taisuke grinned as he scratched his forehead before slit his bangs behind his ears.
“What the? Why didn’t you tell us? We’ve been thinking of sack you out of this project, you silly.”
“I just want to make it a surprise. Besides, if you knew this, I bet you’d wanna come with me all the time so….. I think this is the best that I can do. Killing two birds with one stone.” Taisuke couldn’t be happier than to see Hiromitsu smiling brightly.
“I’m not a girl who likes surprises, you brat. But, this is a big success. I can’t wait to tell them about this.” Hiromitsu always know that Taisuke is full of surprises, even if he didn’t like to receive one.
“So….we good?” Taisuke reached out his right hand for a shake before Hiromitsu stood up and hugged his best friend tightly.
“Never been bad, silly.” Hiromitsu smiled when he felt Taisuke’s arms tightened the hug.
